“Secrets Behind Closed Doors” A Folk-Art Exhibition is curated and implemented by Dandi Gu. The exhibition demonstrates American family stories, daily life, landscapes, and folkways, expressed in playing board games and paintings.
“Secrets Behind Closed Doors” worked by Sue Martinez (b. 1949), self- taught American born artist. She one of the baby boomers. As she said,” I am a part of the group born right after war 2 when there was peace and families were getting started everywhere.” The symbolic of 1950’s and 1960’s family life was created as “Typical Family” or “Perfect Life,” it illustrated every family lived in a pleasant experience, but the fact is not always true. Sue reuses abandoned construction wood to create new artworks, and storytelling a new vision of reality, the story of the 1950’s and 1960’s in America when people were often reluctant, to tell the truth about what was happening behind closed doors.
Dandi Gu said “Folk artists are called self-taught artists. They are serious about using art as a tool to tell their stories. Their artworks are pure, organic and full of direct feelings. Their perspectives are not perspectives but attitudes about love, life, and society. Sue’s paintings can be read as a version of American cultural life and a working notebook that uses art as an expressive tool to tell the hidden stories of family struggle, ordinary life, landscapes, and folkways. The paintings present a way to rise from sorrow to joy. It’s my honor to curate her first exhibition. The exhibition will reveal the secrets.”
